Islam and Yoga 18

Let us see aboutAparigraha is the last sub division in Yama, the first branch of Yoga

Islam and Aparigraha

Aparigraha - Avoiding possessiveness; not longing for others’ property
Holy Quran prescribes circulation of wealth across the whole social spectrum
.
This is an important dimension of emphasis on developing Islam into a wide-angled charitable disposition.

As such the purpose is to ensure that wealth does not remain confined to a few rather it keeps circulating  and percolating to the needy and downtrodden

Islam has, therefore, prescribed Zakāt, Sadāqat and other forms of charity including Fitrā and Sadaqāt Jāriā.

Zakāt is compulsory   and others are also almost compulsory..

Prophet Muhammad (Sal) insisted and ensured that however huge may be the wealth he received it is doled out on the same day – no savings not even a single coin for to morrow

Holy Quran prescribes that whatever is left over after taking care of one’s personal needs and his dependants’ need should be spent on charity to eligible relatives, orphans, needy persons, wayfarers and those who ask.

And Almighty promises a bounty for amount spent on good cause

Circulation of wealth among the community is an instrument of restricting hoarding and amassing wealth.

Hoarding of food grains is viewed as   a grave sin  in Islam

Aparigraha is further insisted in Islam by prohibiting interest, a social evil destroying economy

Islam hates miserliness and warns misers will be punished severely in the next world

Niyama, the second main division of yoga- code for individual discipline has 5 branches.
First among it is Soucha

Islam and Yoga 17

After Ashtaya comes Brahmacharya

Islam and Brahmacharya  (celibacy)

Islam does not encourage or support celibacy.

Marriage is a natural, legal way to relieve  and regulate ones physical feelings and arousing .In turn it leads to mental relief culminating in spirituality

Almighty promises a reward for chaste men and women
“For men and women who guard their chastity…………
For them Almighty prepared forgiveness and great reward Quran 33-35

Islam has taken a firm and decisive stance against   adultery. Allah, the Almighty, commands in explicit and unequivocal words:
And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way” Quran  17: 32.
"The woman and the man guilty of fornication/adultery,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment."
Qur'an, 24 2

Likewise for baseless accusation severe punishment is prescribed
"And those who accuse chaste women then do not bring four witnesses, flog them, (giving) eighty stripes, and do not admit any evidence from them ever; and these it is that are the transgressors. Except those who repent after this and act aright, for surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
Qur'an,  24: 4-5

Whole lot of a society is destroyed by Almighty for practicing unnatural relationship despite clear warning through a messenger

From religious point of view, in contemporary society polygamy is associated with Muslim religion, although not all Muslims practice it, and neither is it restricted to this religion..  In cultures which practice polygamy, its prevalence among that population is often connected to class and socioeconomic status.
Islam regulated polygamy by imposing rules and regulations
One of the important rules is that the man should try to treat all his wives equally as far as possible.

After Sathya comes

 Astaya (abstaining from theft)

Islam and Astaya

The Prophet cursed the thief because he is a corrupt element in society, and if he is left unpunished, his corruption will spread and infect the community i.e. theft is a social evil
So an appropriate deterrent punishment of cutting the hand up to a level is prescribed
A noblewoman stole at the time of the Prophet and one close to Prophet wanted to intercede for her.
The Prophet became angry and said:
“Those who came before you were destroyed because if a rich man among them stole, they would let him off, but if a lowly person stole, they would carry out the punishment on him.  If my daughter were to steal, I would cut off her hand.”
A combination of conditions as follows must be fulfilled before the hand of a thief is cut off:
1- The thing should have been taken by stealth
2- The stolen property should be something of worth and value
3- The stolen property should have been taken from a place where people usually put their property, such as a cupboard, for example.
4- The theft has to be proven, either by the testimony of two qualified witnesses or by the confession of the thief twice.
5- The person from whom the property was stolen has to ask for it back
A person who steals due to hunger and poverty is not liable to have his hands cut off, nor is a person who has been coerced into stealing, punished

Islam and Yoga 15

Sathya is second sub division of Yama, the first major division of Yoga

Virtue of Truthfulness (Sathya) in Islam

Even Lying in jest and lying to make people laugh are condemned by the Prophet (Sal)
Truthfulness is the foundation for the upright person’s character and the springboard for his virtuousness,
Falsehood, its opposite, is the corner stone of a person’s depravity and the launch pad for his wickedness.
Truthfulness of a person starts from within - that is, it is a reflection of a state of true faith –
a person’s dishonesty, lying and deceit is also a reflection of the inner state.
Almighty mentions truthfulness as being the opposite of hypocrisy:
That Almighty may reward the truthful for their truthfulness, and punish the hypocrites ...” (Quran 33:24)
And He mentions sincerity as a mark of truthfulness.
A deed will not be accepted until it is both sincere and correct!
One everyday example of where sincerity and correction of action are often subverted by falsehood is in the buying and selling of goods.
   Prophet said about trade
“If they (two parties meeting to trade) are truthful and clarify (any and all deficiency in their goods), their transaction will be blessed.  But if they lie and conceal (any deficiency in their goods), the blessings of their transaction will be eradicated.”
Almighty states HE would punish even Prophet (Sal)  in case he were to lie…
If he (Prophet Muhammad) had invented false sayings concerning Us, We would surely have grasped him firmly, and then cut off the artery of his heart, and none of you could have withheld Us from doing this.” (Quran 69:44-7)
Lying leads to: hypocrisy.  The Prophet Muhammad (Sal) said:
The hypocrite when he speaks he lies; when he makes an oath he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with something he betrays that trust.”
Prophet (Sal) prayed to Almighty seeking refuge from all sins and from being in debt. He explained that debt will lead one to lies and breaking of promises.
Striving for truthfulness in
 Spirit,
 Word and
 Deed,
is a matter which requires the utmost steadfastness from a true Muslim, as well as the utmost vigilance against the dangers of falsehood, insincerity, deceit and hypocrisy.
