THEIR SACRIFICES
(Sacrifices of Sahabas)
INTRODUCTION
SAHABAS
Who are they ?
The Sahabas or the Sahabis are the loyal followers of the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who earned their knowledge directly from him. It is for
their dedication and perseverance that Islam spread throughout this world. They
followed Islam to the fullest.
Tales of their courage, glory, suffering and victory have
been lauded by classical scholars throughout history
"A sahabi is a person who
believed in the Prophet (PBUH), who came together with the Prophet and who died
as a Muslim."
Etymology
Borrowed from Arabic صَحَابِيّ (ṣaḥābiyy, “companion”),
from صَحِبَ (ṣaḥiba, “to be a
companion”).
Noun
Holy
Quran on the one side and Hadith on the other side make Islam a perfect religion.
Holy
Quran is solely the creation of Almighty .And Almighty undertakes to protect
and preserve it
Recordings
of words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is called Hadith. Preservation
and carrying the Hadith in original form to the generations has been one of the
major tasks achieved by Sahabas
Sahabas
are very much a blessed lot. They had direct access to the words and deeds pf
ultimate Prophet (PBUH) They had no hesitation at all in sacrificing their life,
wealth and family for the sake of Islam . The group of Sahabis include men
women young old rich and poor.
The
number runs into hundreds thousands and lacs .List of prominent companions runs
to more than 50 and again there is a list of Top Ten Sahabis.
We shall
discuss about a few of them here – a few prominent and a few less prominent
, 1,.Bilal (Rali) .
No Muslim can forget the name Bilal. He was
conferred the honor of reciting prayer call (Adhan) in Medina ., Not only that
– when Makah was conquered and Prophet (PBUH) entered the city as a victorious
Monarch , he asked Bilal to climb on the Holy Kabbah and recite prayer call,
This was much frowned by local residents of Makah belonging to upper clans .
For Bilal was a negro that took a slave released by Abu Bakr (RalI)
Bilal was
also one among the three who entered Kabbah along with Prophet (PBUH).
After his
return from journey to the other world (Miraj) Prophet said to Bilal (Ral) , “
I heard sound of your footsteps in Heaven . What is the great good deed you are
dong to achieve such a honor?{ Bilal replied “ Whenever I cleanse the body( Wudu)
I immediately pray 2 units(Rakkats)
Bilal was
one of the most trusted companions of Prophet (PBUH).
How Bilal (Ral) had so much honor conferred on
him ? That itself is a history of torture and sacrifice. Bilal RalI was one of
the earliest converts to Islam . And he
was the first slave to embrace Islam .
Unfortunately
he was owned by one of the major antagonists of Islam and its Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH)
Umayyah ibn Khalaf who applied all sorts
of torture on Bilal to make him change his mind.
He ordered
his men to take Bilal naked and throw him on the hellish sands of the desert at
the hottest times of the summer day. To make sure of the effect of that searing
sand, they further put a heavy rock on Bilal’s chest, trying all the time to
make him revert to polytheism.
Bilal’s response
was a very simple – but an effective one, “Ahad. Ahad (He is One, He is
One)” which
means, ‘Allah is One.’ He said nothing else,
Umayyah and
his men got tired of torturing Bilal. Many asked him just to say something
nice in favour of their idols to let him go. But Bilal bluntly refused .
When Umayyah
got despaired of Bilal’s refusal to disbelief, he accepted Abu Bakr’s offer and sold him to Abo
Bakr (rali).
Bilal was so much attached to
Prophet(PBUH) that after the demise of
Prophet(PBUH) , he refused to recite Prayer call , For , whenever he mentioned
Prophet ‘s name in the prayer call, he
went out of his control and swooned
2. ABU BAKR
–(Rali)
One of the
very prominent Sahabas, Abu Bakr RalI is father of Ayesha (Rali) an undisputed authority on Hadith, and wife of Prophet (PBUH) ,
He belonged
to a very wealthy family and after his embracing Islam, he sacrificed his
entire life and wealth to Islam
Even before coming
to Islam he never went for idol worship .
He was always
with Prophet (PBUH).
He has the
distinction of he being referred in Holy Quran (V 9:40) as a companion to Prophet (PBUH) during migration to Medina in the cave
Abu Bakr rali
was mercilessly beaten by enemies of Islam till be fell unconscious for his joining Islam
He divorced
his wife since she refused to convert to Islam, His parents embraced Islam
Abu Bakr
(rali) was able to bring many of his friends and relatives to Islam by persuasion and presenting Islam in
the right way
Abu Bakr was
really a boon to Islam. He released eight slaves who embraced Islam by spending
40000 dinars for their freedom so that they can escape from persecution by
their masters
Bilal (rali)
is one of such slaves released by Abu Bakr (rali)
Abu Bakr
(rali) took active part in all the battles like Badr, Uhud and so on
After
Prophet’s demise, he was the first Calipha of Islamic Kingdom
At Mecca, Abu Bakr presided at the
Hajj ceremony, and Ali read the proclamation on behalf of Muhammad. The main
points of the proclamation were:
1. Henceforward the
non-Muslims were not to be allowed to visit the Kaaba or perform the
pilgrimage.
2. No one should
circumambulate the Kaaba naked.
3. Polytheism was not to be
tolerated. Where the Muslims had any agreement with the polytheists such
agreements would be honoured for the stipulated periods. Where there were no
agreements a grace period of four months was provided and thereafter no quarter
was to be given to the polytheists.
From the day this proclamation was
made a new era dawned, and Islam alone was to be supreme in Arabia.
Abu Bakr had the distinction of being
the first Caliph in the history of Islam and also the first Caliph to nominate
a successor.
He was the only Caliph in the history
of Islam who refunded to the state treasury at the time of his death the entire
amount of the allowance that he had drawn during the period of his caliphate]
Abu Bakr fell sick , developed high fever and
was confined to bed. His illness was prolonged, and when his condition
worsened, he realized that his end was
near. So , he sent for Ali and requested him
to perform his ghusl since Ali had also
done it for Muhammad(PBUH)
3.Musab Ibn Umair (Rali)
Mus’ab
bin Umayr was raised in comfort and abundance being the member of Mecca’s
wealthiest families. There was no worldly blessing
Mus’ab had not attained. When he accepted Islam, his family had tried
everything to make him forego this new religion. But Mus’ab abandoned his
family, fortune, and Mecca and immigrated to Abyssinia. The Prophet had
appointed him to teach Islam to people of Madina. Many people in Medina entered
Islam with his efforts, and most learned Islam from him. When he was martyred
in the battle of Uhud, he did not even have a sufficient cloth to cover his
whole body. Such was the enthusiasm and sacrifice of the prophet’s companions
to spread Islam.
4.Abu Talha (Rali)
He owned the best gardens in Medina.. One of his gardens named
of ‘Bir Ha' and this was his favorite resort. . The well water was sweet and abundant. The Prophet
(PBUH) often visited that garden and drank the water. Abu Talha said
“O Prophet of Allah, I love ‘bir ha' very much. As
Almighty wants us to spend precisely that
which we love, I make over that garden to be spent in the path of Almighty as
you please
Prophet (PBUH) was very much pleased and remarked “
“What a fine gift to Almighty! I think better you distribute it
among your own heirs”
Abu Talha acted upon the words of Prophet (PBUH)
Conclusion
THE Companions of
Prophet Muhammad,( PBUH) were like no other human beings that lived or will ever live on this earth.
They welcomed the Prophet as the Last Messenger of Allah and declared their
faith, one by one, in Allah as the One and Only Lord of this World without any flinching.
They
fought for Islam when Muslims were clearly the minority and under the threat of
extinction when Islam first took root in the deserts of Arabia. The noble
Companions sacrificed their lives, families and every human comfort imaginable
simply for the sake of Allah.
The
Prophet said this of his noble Companions who fought alongside him in many
battles to ensure that the last message from Allah would be spread far and
wide:
“Fear
Allah; fear Allah and (Refrain from using bad language) about my Companions!
(He said it twice) Do not make them the target of your attacks after me! Whoever loves
them, loves them on account of his love of me; whoever hates them, hates them
on account of his hatred of me. He who maligns them, has maligned me, and he
who maligns me, has maligned Allah, and it is embedment that Allah punishes
those who malign him.” (Tirmidhi)
