Islamic
Prayer and Yogasanas 8
Seated
Postures
“Sthiram
Sugam Asanam “– Patanjali Yoga Sutra .
It indicates
that the ultimate aim of asanas is to sit effortlessly in meditating postures
for long time
The two
important meditating postures are Padmasana and Vajrasana .
Seated
position in Islamic Prayer called jalsah
is very much similar to vajrasana
.
Muslim
author Nizami and Swami Sivananda opine that Sitting pose in Islamic prayer
resembles very much Vajrasana
For Muslims
Practicing Prayer from young age, it becomes very easy to sit in Padmasana and Vajrasana
for long time.
In seated
position in Islamic Prayer the index finger is extended in a straight line to
affirm the Oneness of Almighty .while Thumb and middle finger form a circle
This
resembles Yoga Mudra
Spinal
Twists
At the end
of yogic session whole spine is given a
thorough twist to the right and left by Ardha matsyendrasana..to even
out the spine and keep balanced.
Same way Islamic Prayer is concluded with
Prayer for Peace (salam) by turning the
head to the right and then left.
This is
useful for keeping the neck flexible though not as effective and as difficult
as Ardha matsyendrasana
