Memoirs of Nellai 4 Canara Bank Tirunelveli Town

Canara Bank Tirunelveli Town

In my one day journey into past I visited ten places in Tirunelveli
Canara Bank Tirunelvli Town Branch was my 4th place of visit
This Branch has played a very important role in my career path.

Ar the age of 22 I reported at this Branch
Mr. R Gopalan was heading the branch – a meticulous man- expert in all wakes of Banking – particularly advances

As clerk I worked here for full 5 years till I was promoted to scale I and transferred to Kerala

Very memorable 5 years indeed

A company of good friends – we worked with competitive team spirit

The branch had all types of Advances –KCC OCC SDB CDB BE ILC FILC NBMS and so on
We had very good customers like Thirumalai Mills Nellai Cotton Mill and  Sun Paper Mill , S.Chokalingam Pillai
In deposit portfolio also we had some rare type of  accounts like ISB (Insured Savings Bank)

I worked under three Branch in Charges- MS R Gopalan   KU Ramasamy and  Ramalingam

MS Naryanan , Balakrishnan  IS Arumugam, S.Mahadevan  I Lakshmanan Dorairaj  and Nainar were officers

Others are Venkatachalam – still I remember his artistic handwriting      L.Padmanabhan               Lakshmi Varagan     Thanu Pillai
Packiyam Pillai         Sankaran      G.Sivaramakrishnan (GSRK),
  J.Srinivasa ragavan,          P.K Sankararaman ,          V.Muthukrishnan
DT Sudhakaran       , Sae Naga subranaiyan    E.. Subramaniyan                                       K. Subramaniayn        Rajasekar      Kanthimathi,           G A Parvatham
K.S Gopalakrihnan             k.Sundaram  ,          Thandavarayan
Dayalan          Padmaja      Valli Nayakam ,      Esakki            TL Rajamani and so on

Many were from erstwhile Pandiyan Bank . Still dhoty was office dress for them

G.Sivaramakrishnan, K.Sundaram  and G.Sundram of D.O and myself moved as a team in and outside the branch.
Mr J Srinivasan also joined us  now and then
DO was just opposite to our branch

Still I am maintaining contact with GSRK – Often..
.  K.Sundaram now and then
 G.Sundaram occasionally

Often(almost daily) we went to Hotels and theatres

During my 5 years tenure at this branch many staff marriages and promotions took  both including mine

I got married while working in this branch .  For this I hosted a biriyani dinner in my house. Almost all the staff members attended. The taste of Biriyani amd Pickles prepared by my mother is still lingering in their tongues

GSRK also got married .
G Sundaram, K.Sundaram and Padmaja  attended his marriage at Batlangundu . Very sweet memories

DT Sudhakar got married
GA Parvatham got married

The branch was  always in limelight in promotion li            st
MsValli nayagam TL Rajamani  V.Muthukrishnan  GSRK K Sundaram  G.Sundaram and KS Goplalakrishnan and Narayanan   were promoted  apart from me

Mr Narayanan officer wsa an expert in advances and all fields of banking
So this branch was a founding stone for my banking career

Even inspection reports I used to handle independently

A few romantic affairs were going on in the branch

Such a memorable branch I visited after a gap of 40 and odd years.

Like Junction Branch here also place and appearance stood changed

I know very well none of my  erstwhile colleagues will be there yet I went inside the branch  with some sort of unexplainable expectation  and feelings

I felt like at least meeting the manager and talking a few words
But I think manager was on leave

So I came out with a strange mixture of joy and disappointment

Still many more things are coming in my mind

 - Mr Sankaranaarayanan – a compassionate DM ,
Mr Mani DM who arranged a very big party involving all local branches on the eve of our promotion- Mr K.S Gopalakrishnan, G Sundram and myself in same batch ,
our joint study at Trichy under guidance of Mr K. Raman Manager Teppakulam Branch ( brother of K.Sundaram)
our joint trip to Trivandrum for interview (We were under Trivandrum Circle)
Branch visit of Comrade C.Subramaniyan, Leader of Employees’ union when I was Branch Secretary  and so on

I think this is more than enough

The posting will be incomplete if I do not  express my heart felt gratitude to
Mr KN Rao a veteran Trade Unionist , founder of Officers’ Union  who was heading Town Branch before my joining there
He was instrumental in my entering Canara Bank Service

Thank You Thank You Thank You so much Sir

Soon we shall meet in Nellai 5
