What is the origin of this phrase?

Ans:

Film industry which came into being in the early 20th century has contributed many words and phrases to English Language
One such phrase is 
Silver Screen

In 1910s movie screen were coated with reflective metallic paint resulting in a silver surface which helped in better display of the projected images.

In course of time the term silver screen was used to refer to cinema in general
