Kutta (Coorg, Karnataka)
Rain rain Rain
Rain for two
hundred days in a year .
Yet not
enough of water
It is Kutta,
Coorg District Karnataka – where I was transferred at the fag end of my service
defying all the norms and rules and regulations due to administrative exigency
– a very beautiful example of official jargon
I had
completed 2 ½ of years at Karaikal when a I received transfer order to Kutta
As usual I
received a call from trade unionists – Don’t go to Kutta. Go on one month
leave. We will arrange for better place
With 40
years completed in Bank, and with just 1 ½ of years of left over service I was
not prepared to waste one month’s leave just for an unguaranteed promise of
better place .
I began my
preparation to go Kutta. I contacted Kutta branch and concerned circle office
(Then Hassan later Mysore) . A good old friend of mine Mr. Chandru was in CO .
He informed that Kutta is 100 KM away from Mysore by bus.
In the meanwhile
a trade union activist, and my good
friend requested me to go on at least 15 days leave. I was in need of some time
to think. So I went on 10 days leave
Everyone in
the branch except me looked worried and
concerned . A clerk asked me –how you are still smiling ?
Many
colleagues started giving me suggestions and advice
-Better go
on VRS – You have completed nearly 40 years of service .So you won’t lose much
- Don’t go
to an unknown place and land yourself in trouble.
But I had
made my mind to go to Kutta .For I was not prepared to surrender 18 months
service. And I had my inborn curiosity to see a new place. The curiosity
increased much when I saw a mail from my son depicting the natural beauty of
Kutta
So just
after 10 days leave I travelled by train to Mysore. My co traveler was an IAS
officer. He said “If you go to court you can get your transfer modified
With just 18
months of remaining service I was not in a mood to waste my money time and
health in a judicial fight against the mighty Bank
Mr
Ramachandra , then manager at Kutta received me in Mysore station and dropped
at Bus Stand with proper guidance
When I
reached Kutta it was almost evening .Thank God the branch was open and all the
staff members were present. A warm welcome with a hot Coorg coffee refreshed my
mind and body
After a few
stays stay at Kutta I went back to Karaikal. Actually my plan was to have it
alone in Kutta leaving my wife with my son in Cuddalore. But my wife didn’t
agree for that. Let us face it together was here words and it seemed good also
So I
surrendered the quarters and furniture to the bank and arranged for a Lorry to
shift household articles to Kutta.
After a few
days stay with my son in Cuddalore we proceeded to Kutta. My grandson cried
much and with heavy heart we bid farewell to Cuddalore
Morning we
landed at Mysore and proceeded to Kutta in a cab through Nagarhole reserve
forest known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. It is a tiger sanctuary. But never
we had a chance to sight a tiger. We had seen a number of deers, elephants,
peacocks, bison and snakes during travel by bus, car and tourist bus of Forest
Department
At last we
arrived at Kutta. It is in catchment area of River Cauvery. Measurement of rain is mentioned in inches,
not in centimeters .Rainfall of twenty inches ( 50 cm- -500 mm) is normal there
I was told
Kerala is
called God’s own Country for its magnificent natural beauty. But in my opinion
Kutta is far more beautiful than Kerala
Let us see
the details next week.
