Notes 2
The advice given to me
by some senior citizens about Punjab is still
in my memory .
1. Don’t discuss
religion and politics with any body
2. As far as possible
avoid crowded places like theaters
3. The so called
terrorists come with a fixed target. One should be careful to avoid being
caught in cross firing
Jalandhar is a
convenient place to live in with a peaceful atmosphere.
“Have your industry in
Ludhiana, business in Amritsar and residence in Jalandhar “ goes a saying in Punjab
The quarters I fixed
was a very spacious and comfortable house at Guru Jeypal Nagar..
Good, new set of
furniture was provided by the Bank. My land lord was a Sardarji employed in a
senior technical position in Nangal Dam. He was very happy to know that I am
not a smoker. He was very friendly and helpful.
Sardarjis won’t even
touch cigarette I was told.
Jalandhar was our
first ( and last) experience in North India . Our knowledge of Hindi or Punjabi
was almost nil. So we had so many surprises here – mostly pleasant ones
We had a mixed feeling of wonder and envy to see the
corporation water being used for washing the vehicles and for garden. – such an
abundant supply of water .And rain was a very very rare thing
Absolutely no power
cut
Winter is welcome beautifully
with ladies spinning warm clothing. In a variety of colours
.Kids will go to catch
the bus or Rickshaw to school by themselves – no parental support . This
develops the self confidence off children.
It will be wonderful
to see the children disappearing after a few steps because of the mist
There is basic
difference between north and south India which I realized only in Jalandhar
Many a thing like
independence struggle, partition of the country, invasion by foreign monarchs –
all these are only part of History textbook for southern people. But our
northern counterpart have faced the wrath of all these.
Added to these are
vagaries of nature and climate- severe summer and winter, dust storms, floods – all these
make have made them very strong in body and mind with struggling nature
And regarding whether
it was strange to see sunshine till 7.30 pm in summer even though I have
studied about this in School
My son and daughter were commuting to school by rickshaw..After a few months I bought cycles fo them
In cantonment area lot
of south Indians including Tahitians of Defense Services lived Occasionally
Tamil films will be exhibited there .Items like tamarind and palm jiggery were available in Cantt.
Punjabis won’t purchase wheat
flour. They will purchase wheat and get it ground into flour in flour mills called
Atta chakies
Mobile restaurants preparing
rotis and subjies at our door steps are specialty of Jalandhar
In Dhabas hot rotis will be prepared
by applying the dough directly in the
red hot ovens made of mud.- a sight to see.
Still lingering in my mind are
Nikku Park and Lovely Sweets.
Notes will continue next week
with more surprises
