Jalandhar Nostalgic Notes 3

Nostalgic Notes 3

Very Big windows with no cross bars was a specialty of Jalandhar - perhaps a sign of no fear of theft.
Changes below 1 rupee were out of circulation – any bill will be rounded off to rupee
Sardarjis – hefty  in appearance – very gentle behavior and generally kind hearted – a strong mind in strong body – No where we can see a Sardarji beggar
Punjabis are very fond of food. In winter they will consume a lot of butter and ghee. Very tasty, good food at an affordable price is available in Dhabas and hotels
A very big sweet stall, Lovely Sweets –an unforgettable taste is Jalandhar – Most of the sweets were sold at Rs 16/ kg – even thirty years back it was cheap
Children were admitted in a very big school – no break in academic year. . While collecting school fees they deducted what we have paid in the previous school for the academic year- Another surprise of Jalandhar
Distribution of mark sheets was like a function and feast with snacks and tea for all visitors and above all a kind and humanitarian treatment
Once when I was travelling in a bus I had given Rs 100/ for a ticket of Rs.30/ . On the way the bus had a break down and I could not meet the conductor to get the balance.
I wrote a letter to Punjab Transport enclosing the ticket and there was no reply for about a week. Then I met the transport manager and he said within a week a reply will be given with no much hope I left
Next day a man from transport department came to my house and paid me Rs100/ . No receipt or letter was taken from me
Another Jalandhar Surprise
Likewise I got the second cooking gas cylinder on the day of applying
A few more Jalandhar Surprises
My son dashed slightly on an elderly person when he was learning scooter driving. No harsh words- no angry mood –he just said be careful my son in a kind tone
One Ramzan we celebrated in Jalandhar. On that day we have to pay some amount as a compulsory charity to Muslims. Most of the rickshaw Walla’s are Muslims from UP.
But they bluntly refused to accept charity.
Then we found a lonely old couple and paid the amount to them
And regarding rickshaw Walla’s  - they are very sincere in duty. However rough and tough may be the way they will see that the passenger is landed in the destination safely
With a very pleasant surprise in Jalandhar I conclude this part
There was a friend of mine – one of the richest persons in Jalandhar .Once I had gone to his shop and while talking to him I asked for water to drink.
To my surprise the gentleman got up, took a glass tumbler , filed it with water from the cooler and gave it to me
I became uneasy and asked him – you could have asked one of your employees to get me water –
“Our religion emphasizes that any one asking for food or water should be taken care of immediately without any delay “
Was the reply by the gentleman
Really I was dumbfound
And I felt proud to be an Indian

Notes will continue next week
